OCTOBER#
TREES
What particular trees compose your local ecosystem? Where did they come from? How do they interact with the rest of the world? How do we interact with trees, with our bodies, ecosystems, cultures, and economies? What type of relationships do we have with plants? What is our responsibility to this relationship? How have settler colonialism and capitalism disrupted our ancestral relationships to plants, and how may we begin to heal those lineages? What lessons are there to be gleaned from our plant kin in times of rapid change, unpredictability, and instability? How does state or legal recognition enable us to better relate to our plant kin? How might it restrict these relationships? How do we project human morals and judgement onto the plant world, and with what consequences? How are plants used differently in spiritual practice? How have plants been used in spiritual practice in your own lineage?
Join us as we converse with our plant kin, embrace our inevitable kinship and necessary collaboration with trees, dive into the wood wide web and plant intimacies, and talk about forest guardians, ecosomatics, “becoming a mouthpiece” for other species around us, and more.
The Study Club will begin by following the threads of these questions – offering a selection of curated content (essays, podcasts and short films) each month – by writers, activists and artists exploring these themes in their work. In the session, we will come together to reflect on our collective insights, and how we can apply the learning to our social change work.
This space is for people seeking to dive beneath the surface of everyday engagement – and to dedicate the time to learn, think, be inspired and nourished in their practices.
