regenerative activism

Movement-building is alliance-building and this is particularly true in the case of environmental activism. This session explores the multi-layered response of global environmental movements to the complex series of threats that affect all who inhabit this planet.

Global environmental NGO networks are often well-known organisations with global reach, but relatively distinct approaches to working on the ground. We will explore questions of power, money and resource in movement-building, looking at differences between the global north and south, as well as professional and volunteer activist spaces. We will consider sources of and responses to burnout within environmental NGO movements and explore the distinct contribution of youth activism.

We will ask:

How essential is a regenerative approach to addressing the environmental problems of our time?

In what way do imbalances of power and resource play out in the environmental activist sphere?

To what extent does youth activism shape the direction of the environmental movement?
